Chen Dandizi created this dual-channel video piece before her graduation. It is named after the time period required for a pot of water to boil in the video. The left screen shows a pot of boiling water, and the right one shows some foreign matter dropping into an inverted eye. The reactions happening in both screens get more and more intense over time. The juxtaposition of two seemingly irrelevant images generates a particular tension, which further produces a certain kind of empathic association. In the process of watching, viewers get caught by a strong yet invisible force. The work presents that the object is suffering from irresistible “violence” from the outside, and experiencing a process from calm to out-of-control in formation. Although the “perpetrators” are not shown in the camera, we could still perceive the existence of certain kinds of power relationships through the gradually intensive reactions happening in both screens.
