In Two Cones (2025), American artist Douglas Rieger continues his exploration of materiality and form through a dialogue between craftsmanship and abstraction. The sculpture brings together hammered aluminum, wood, and industrial components to create a structure that feels both mechanical and animate.
Rieger’s interest in shaping sheet metal—first approached through traditional hand tools such as hammers and mallets, later refined with forming equipment like the English wheel—finds here a distilled expression. The work captures the moment when a form begins to emerge, poised on the threshold between becoming and being.
Two Cones evokes an object in transition: part creature, part machine, tentatively extending itself into space. The result is a sculpture that feels at once grounded and in motion, suggesting a nascent vitality within the industrial materials that compose it.
