‘Omen’ (2021) depicts a detail from Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio’s ‘Boy bitten by a Lizard’ (c. 1594-5), painted on a cast resin sculpture. It shows a youth recoiled in fright, dissolving into the cat’s patterned fur. His terrified astonishment, caught in a scream, reveals a diviner of foreboding illuminations. An ornamental rose, tucked behind one ear, symbolizes the transience of beauty and life—a secret premonition of what is to come. His horrified stance seems to mimic the cat, who playfully reclines. In stark contrast to the youth, the feline enjoys a moment of clairvoyance, cunningly observing sublime revelations. As a symbol of both good and ill portent, the cat has an enigmatic quality as unpredictable as its temperaments—perceived as a guardian and benefactor, while also emblematic of darkness and death.
