Capsule Shanghai is pleased to welcome you to visit us at Frieze NY, where we will present Sarah Faux’s solo booth.
In Sarah Faux's paintings, each canvas absorbs color like a porous skin, corporeal forms emerging slowly from pools of oil. These fragmented, often feminine, forms are activated by prolonged looking, as viewers project their own sense memory into the liminal image before them. Like a Rorschach blot, how you see is as critical, and as sensual, as what you see.
Following her recent foray into cut-canvas collages, for our booth Faux will create a site-specific wall drawing composed of bodies in motion. Coopting a male first person point of view, in this composition Faux explores a polymorphous moment of touch, as a feminine body gazes awkwardly back at her interloper, both posing for her viewer and containing her own internal space. This larger work will be displayed in conjunction with paintings in oil on stretched surfaces, works on absorbent surfaces, with imagery that emerges like photos in pools of darkroom developer.
This piece is a natural extension of recent developments in Faux's practice, expanding her cut-out body-parts into an ambitious spatial construction where, as in color field painting, the viewer is thrust directly into the work, their own body inevitably responding to the large scale of these dye and distressed skins hung loosely from grommets.
