Untitled (2014) consists of small aluminum plates on which the artists has imprinted images of electrified gas (plasma). The project was initiated at the facilities of the Plasma Science and Fusion Center (PSFC) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge (MA, USA), where Wang has worked in close contact with a team of scientists to realize her work. Pointing a high-speed camera at a pressurized environment in which the plasma was housed, the artist photographed what is generally invisible to human vision albeit constituting what is known to be the fourth state of matter in the universe. Wang later applied similar process of the early daguerreotypes to fix the images of plasma on the surface of aluminum plates. Floating on polished metal sheets, the images have a primordial form, evocative of the structures of microscopic plankton drifting in water currents or the remains of past lives fossilized in rocks.
