The work is one of the original scenes from Gao Yuan's animation ‘Lunar Dial’, the first long video by the artist realized over the course of 6...

The work is one of the original scenes from Gao Yuan's animation ‘Lunar Dial’, the first long video by the artist realized over the course of 6 years and merely the tip of the iceberg covering the lengthy and repetitive process of preparation of the animation. Gao Yuan's works evolve within their own contexts by showing figures, objects, and scenarios that are associated with one's emotions and lived experiences.
This painting is based on a scene I saw when trekking around Lugu Lake (Yunnan Province, China). The karst landscape reveals a bizarre vitality that renders an ordinary turn of mountain road inexplicably unreal. In the animation, a flock of colorful birds flies out of the crevice, as if they are freshly hatched by the mountain.
The title “Suspension” refers to a phenomenological notion developed by Edmund Husserl, where one suspends all judgment and assumption in order to examine phenomena as they are originally given to consciousness.
