Bear is the representation of two very opposite feelings: looking at the animal, one might either get scared by the bear or think that the bear is itself terrified. This kind of duplicity is what the artist experienced getting to know many Chinese people, who while showing off their strength and bravery, are at the same time very frightened and subdued.
