Set somewhere between reality and dream, Untitled (2020) is a unique piece among Wang Haiyang’s new series of figurative acrylic paintings, which makes its debut at Liste Basel 2021.

A standalone piece counterbalancing the more abstracted series of watercolors on the opposite wall, where raging bodies emerge from watery splashes of colors, the painting realistically portrays three characters laying on a black-and-white checkerboard floor surrounded by a post-apocalyptic landscape.

Joining an intimate embrace, these androgynous figures transcend any strict definition of gender, race, age, or any taxonomy. An hirsute creature rests their legs cozily under the body of a white-haired real-world human-animal hybrid. Their back uncovers a microcosmos of organs and sensory nerve cells exposing the wildly imaginative, implausible, and dazzling body of a new post-human race. The nuance of color fades from electric green to sensual pink. A third body lays on top; their extremity morphing into phallic limbs releasing fluid as if in a state of arousal.
