In her first solo exhibition at Capsule, Honey, Ding Zhi presents a selection of her recent paintings on canvas. Taking the complexity of “cuteness” as a central visual strategy, the works draw on the familiar and straightforward visual languages of children’s books, film, and mass media to explore how individuals navigate established structures of rules, desire, and power. Through the sense of intimacy often associated with “cuteness,” the works bring violence, vulnerability, absurdity, hostility, and power asymmetries into the same frame. They resist any fixed emotional response or defined narrative, leaving the viewer suspended in a state of ambiguity and irresolution.
