Alice Wang and Ben Tong | 'The Zone' at Practice NY

2019.06.30 - 07.31

Capsule Shanghai is pleased to announce 'The Zone', a collaborative project between Alice Wang and Ben Tong in conjunction to their residency at PRACTICE NY.

Cosmos, phlox, milkweed, bananas, oranges, watermelons, caterpillars, chrysalises, butterflies, as well as other flora and fauna create the setting for three videos: OraclePyramids and Parabolas I, and Under the Tongue. Filled with fluttering beings that can taste with their feet and sense parts of the electromagnetic spectrum invisible to the human eye, The Zone is an artificial biosystem that explores an entangled world of synthetic and natural beings, and their residual.

Through the lens of Biosphere 2 in Arizona, Oracle is an apocalyptic meditation on the life of plants and organisms within the 3.14 acre self-enclosed ecosystem; filmed on 16mm at three Meso-American pyramids in the Yucatán Peninsula and at the Very Large Array in New Mexico, Pyramids and Parabolas I is a film series that explores how geometry informs the design of scientific instruments and ancient monoliths as devices to interface with other-worldly beings; and Under the Tongue is a video that muses on subjectivities that navigate an ocean of information, and as a counterpoint, the sub-lingual, sub-perceptual, the unknown that underpins life.

The three videos inside the screening room all evoke an impression of that which lies outside of everyday perception. The figure of the butterfly and the habitat in the main space provide a glimpse into a world that runs parallel to our own.
