ESSERE UNO. FABRICS AND CERAMICS BY ALESSANDRO TEOLDI

For the first time in Italy, Alessandro Teoldi brings to Savona some of his most iconic textile and sculptural works inspired by the Martini style.

We are pleased to present Alessandro Teoldi’s first Italian museum exhibition. Milanese, born in 1987, Teoldi has been living in New York since 2011 and certainly represents one of the original and coherent voices of the emerging art scene.

His graphic and sculptural work has gained visibility on the international scene thanks to collaborations with the galleries Capsule Shanghai and Marinaro New York, which have made his qualities known and appreciated in the Eastern and Western markets.

Among the peculiarities of Teoldi’s expressive language is the privileged use of different coloured fabrics, cut and sewn together, to create compositions based on the juxtaposition of essential human forms and figures, with synthetic and archaic profiles. A sort of figurative primitivism that does not, however, trace or directly cite the modernist examples of the historical avant-gardes (from Matisse to Picasso and Sironi, to name but a few), because in Teoldi’s figures it is always possible to glimpse and sense the freshness of the contemporary gaze, a tension between form and concept that is absolutely in keeping with the echoes of the current context.

The figures appear as if suspended in space and time, almost always engaged in silent dialogues in pairs or groups, amidst landscapes and barely hinted at horizons. This poetic trait can also be found in Teoldi’s terracotta sculptures, which he created during a residency in Albisola in 2022 (Studio Ernan Design), and which he continued to work on in the following months.

The exhibition we are dedicating to Alessandro Teoldi takes its cue from the contemporary Arturo Martini exhibitioncontemporanea esposizione di Arturo Martini, which shows for the first time six carpets from the 1930s, woven from original designs by the artist. In our vision, there is always the search for dialogue between works and artists of the past with artists of our time. As part of his profound aesthetic research, Alessandro Teoldi has always declared a conscious admiration for Martini’s sculpture, and the discovery of his first and perhaps only woven carpets offered an opportunity to bring these two apparently distant worlds into dialogue.
