ARTIST TALK: Li Gang and Alice Wang: Material Metamorphosis

Date: Saturday, October 7, 2017, 2 to 4 pm

Venue: Ullens Center for Contemporary Art (UCCA), Jiuxianqiao Rd. 4, 798 Art District, Beijing

The Ullens Center for Contemporary Art (UCCA) is pleased to invite artists Li Gang ang Alice Wang for a conversation about their practice and the notion of materiality. Li Gang and Alice Wang both place a strong emphasis on the materiality of their respective work. While the physical components of their work undergo transformation during the creative process, the materiality of these art objects is carefully preserved. As conceptual art and virtual reality have increasingly become the focus of contemporary artistic discourse, Li and Wang's tendency towards an object-oriented ontology compels us to reexamine our understanding of sculpture. Given the difference in both education and background for the two artists, with Wang having mainly resided in Canada and the US, and Li in China, we will open up a discussion looking at the differences the two artists have had in exploring and shaping their respective artistic language, in hopes of encouraging further dialogue on the topic. The conversation is moderated by UCCA Curator, Yang Zi.
