Capsule Shanghai is pleased to present Collages Unbound, an exhibition of works by Alessandro Teoldi and Sarah Faux. Approaching collages techniques on disparate materials such as cut-canvas, found fabrics and concrete blocks, both artists seek for a sense of intimacy and closeness to their subjects.

Teoldi's textile works are made with blankets that the artist, friends, and acquaintances collected during their travels on flights. Teoldi skillfully manipulates these blankets as if they were paper. After a quick initial sketch, he uses chalk to define the shapes and their relationships on the canvas. The silhouettes evolve spontaneously, according to the nature of the fabrics used; the shapes are cut out of the chosen blankets, then glued together and sewn onto the canvas. Seemingly, in the concrete pieces, the compositions are planned in paper and plastic and cast in concrete, the subjects lingering between memory and reality.

Faux's cut-outs, rendered in larger-than-life dimensions and mounted on a white wall, thrust viewers into an up-close position in relation to their subjects. Faux crops her subjects to focus on specific body parts, a compositional strategy that pulls the audience into an intimate, first- person perspective. Unable to identify a pronounced figure, we find ourselves gazing into flattened fields of color, participating actively in perceiving the bodies before us.
