'Where the Clouds Pass By' (2019) depicts a street scene in Hong Kong. The title references the scene in the animation, 'Cloud of the Unknown', where a group of clouds float in the foreground. Gao breaks away from photographic source material, so that backgrounds emerge as a space to be filled. Paying homage to the real world, she wishes for the background to appear more substantial and graphic than reality.
