The Reader is inspired by Leonora Carrington’s painting The Bird Men of Burnley, where one of the three figures with cone-shaped hats is holding a book in his hand. The shape of the book resembles a butterfly or a moth. Moths fly out of the pages; the cover reads “CHEMISTRY”… This image fascinates me. I can barely find any specific information about the painting. I started to draw connections between the moth-shaped book and some manuscripts I painted in 2019 on the subject of the reader. That is how I began to paint "The Reader."
