Rooted in the lineage of surrealism, Cai Zebin’s paintings delves into art history’s time-honored subjects and motifs, among which the subject of self-portrait remains a focal point in his recent works. Gothic Game 2 is an extension of Cai’s earlier painting Gothic Game (2021). While Gothic Game portrays the kinship between a father and a son, Gothic Game 2 is a dedication to romantic relationship, and is inspired by the artist’s first meeting with his wife and memorable fun moments in their time together.
