During the period of a few years, Gao Yuan rarely left her Beijing studio if not to conduct rural 'ethnography' functional to the production of her animations. 'Street at Night' (2017) depicts a typical view of Beijing, an open street set against the night cityscape, dilapidated, lonely, and possessing a stale industrial stench, like the forgotten ruins of a once mighty city and its periphery, ruthlessly plundered of former lustre.
