Initially trained as a painter, Chan has been oscillating between painting and sculpture since 2008. Her works on paper employ a process-based approach where pictorial and physical experiences overlap in the idea of a ‘collage in space’, reinvigorating a sense of sensory primacy that is lost in the daily dominance of the virtual world. Chan conveys a sense of preciousness in the placement and handling of delicate clusters that seems to talk about both nature and commodity: the absence of figuration is deliberate but a distinct sense of human presence is still inherent.
