The work is one of the original scenes from Gao Yuan's animation ‘Lunar Dial’, the first long video by the artist realized over the course of 6...

The work is one of the original scenes from Gao Yuan's animation ‘Lunar Dial’, the first long video by the artist realized over the course of 6 years and merely the tip of the iceberg covering the lengthy and repetitive process of preparation of the animation. Gao Yuan's works evolve within their own contexts by showing figures, objects, and scenarios that are associated with one's emotions and lived experiences.
The scene in the painting originates from the site of the former Shougang Iron & Steel Co., Ltd. Bleak, desolate, and overgrown with weeds, the place felt mysterious and dangerous with rusty boilers and rails scattering around. The arrow on the red light is fictive; the arrow goes through the light, but the light remains on. In the animation, mosquito-sized birds circle around it in spirals.
The title makes reference to the painting The Blow to the Heart by Rene Magritte, depicting a rose and a dagger.
