‘Slumber’ (2025) depicts a detail from Bernadino Luini’s ‘The Virgin holding the Sleeping Child, with St John and Two Angels’ (c. 1525-1530). It shows the somber portrait of a mother and child, painted on green velvet in a golden frame. A sense of tranquility permeates the scene as their features materialize in a verdant abyss. Surrounded by gold—the mineral of light and offspring of the earth— the frame is emblematic of enlightenment, perfection, and immortality. Just as gold is the transmutation of matter within the womb of the earth, the sleeping child dreams in a prefiguration of death: unconsciously manifesting the potentiality of development, within a shapeless and primal void, through cycles of awakening life.
